Making It Fit

Sometimes it doesn’t fit.

This weekend we tried to install a bike rack on my car. The way that my trunk is configured and the way that the rack attached…well, it just didn’t fit.

We tried for a long time, wasted time actually and at the end of it all, it just didn’t fit.

A little disappointment for sure but after giving it a good try we simply conceded defeat and then, we were on to Option B.

This same situation exists in business. Sometimes you just can’t make it fit:

  1. Between you and the client and your mismatched personalities
  2. Between the type of work they are asking you to do and your “sweet spot”
  3. Between what they consider to be ethical and what you know is honest
  4. Between their expectations and what you know can deliver without undermining your health and that of everyone around you

Sometimes it just doesn’t fit.

And like we did with the bike rack, it’s time for Plan B.

In business we tend to hold on for a long while. We don’t want to give up; we are hellbent on making it work.

There’s revenue to be earned, a new client to be had. It just HAS to fit.

But oftentimes it does not and Plan B is the most sensible and business-smart thing that you can do. Holding on to a bad client or bad idea for too long undermines your sanity, revenue, stamina and growth potential.

Plan B anyone.
